About Us

A vision to create a unique ecological and stylish holiday space

The Corkshack was a project conceived by Dewi Jones, a graphic designer originally from Wales. He and his wife Clare wanted to reconstruct the medieval roundhouses of the local area in the Alentejo, Portugal and make them the focal point of their luxury eco glamping business. After careful consideration and research into the project, Dewi came up with the design for the Corkshack, a structure based on the dwellings of the Bronze and Iron Age people of more than two thousand years ago, but with a modern and natural twist!

The desire to design a space, which was both stylish and unique and, at the same time, in harmony with nature, highlighted the need to use ecological materials wherever possible. Hence, wood was used to build the main frame of the 25sqm decagon Corkshack, and the exterior walls covered with cork, an excellent natural thermal and acoustic insulator. Natural broom was sourced to thatch the conical roof to add an authentic touch.

After successfully building two Corkshacks for their tourism business, the couple has decided to make this vision a reality for others. Therefore, drawing on this experience and an enthusiasm to help others contribute to being more environmentally friendly while achieving their aims, they have teamed up with MAN Architects in Lisbon, Portugal. The highly experienced, professional studio has produced high quality architectural plans, which are available at an affordable price.

These plans aim to improve the building experience of anyone wishing to construct a Corkshack and create a connection between themselves and nature.

Better for nature, better for your spirit.

If you are looking for a stylish ecological
cabin or hut with a distinctive look,
the Corkshack is the perfect choice for you.

A tried and tested concept

These beautiful eco-lodges were first built in rural Alentejo, Portugal by a local builder and used to provide holiday accommodation

as part of a successful tourism business.
Rather than disturbing the land to make it level, ecological ground screw foundations provide the solution to challenges

such as difficult-to-access areas and uneven or sloping ground. This means minimal impact on the ground and surrounding area,

resulting in reduced waste disposal and disruption.
A solid wooden frame forms the main structure, special cork insulation clads the exterior walls and natural thatch tiles on the roof

complete the look and provide the perfect unique accommodation.
